About Us

My name is Lynsey Hornsby. My husband Ian and I set up Sunnyside Pet Cremation Services from our smallholding, Sunnyside Poultry in September 2015. We made the decision to set up a pet crematorium after feeling disappointed with the crematorium options available locally after Pip, our old Jack Russell, had been put to sleep. We knew then that with some alteration work to the existing stable block, we could create a beautiful, welcoming, friendly and professional pet crematorium.

Our smallholding is in a lovely semi-rural location in the National Forest, tucked behind the A511 alongside our own wood. We are close to Burton, Swadlincote, Derby and Ashby which makes us easily accessible.

On our smallholding Ian sells hens and quail, keeping many different varieties. Customers can buy our eggs from the farm. Our son keeps his own breeding flocks of bantams and we successfully show our birds. Visitors will not fail to notice the cockerels crowing and the hens singing their egg songs.  We always have at least one feral cat that we look after on the farm. We have a polytunnel on the farm, so that we can try to be as self sufficient as possible.

Our family pets include Bess our little old terrier, who is usually with me in the crematorium meeting room, Luna our Hungarian Vizsla (who also sometimes accompanies me in the crematorium, and is very liberal with cuddles), and a young, wonderfully crazy Working Cocker Spaniel called Nettle. Other family pets are tropical birds, which are in a beautiful, spacious aviary in the car park, Crested Geckos, tortoises, rabbits and ferrets.

As animal lovers we know how difficult it is when it is time to say goodbye to a beloved pet. Our promise to you is that your pet will be treated with love, care and dignity whilst with us. You can be assured that your pet will be given an individual cremation here on our site and all of his or her ashes will be returned to you, usually the next working day.

At Sunnyside Pet Cremation Services we are able to look after any pet after their final days, from a small hamster to a large dog. No matter what size or type of pet you ask us to look after, he or she will be given the best care.

From the moment your pet comes into our care up until the time you take away the ashes we operate a strict and thorough paperwork process so that you can be sure that you receive all of your, and only your pet’s ashes.

 Attending in Person

If you are bringing your pet to us then an appointment will be made so that you can be assured that your pet will be looked after promptly, in a comforting and private environment.

Appointments can usually made within a relatively short space of time to allow you to bring your pet directly to us once they have passed away. To guarantee a same day appointment we would ask you telephone as soon as you are able to that day, ideally during the morning.

Please ensure your pet is wrapped in a clean blanket or towel to enable safe, dignified and hygienic transfer. Cardboard boxes are also fine, if that is what you prefer.

When you arrive at our premises we can help you to take your pet from your car to our Quiet Room. We use a trolley for larger pets.

We will take you through to our comfortable and welcoming Meeting Room. Once we have gone through the necessary paperwork with you, we will leave you to spend some time in privacy with your pet if you wish.

Due to the length of time of the cremation process we are unable to allow owners to stay for the duration of their pet's cremation.

Collection Service

Once your pet has passed away we can arrange to collect them either from your home or from your vet.

This service is available by prior arrangement to addresses within 30 minutes of our premises (the Burton, Swadlincote, Derby, Ashby and Coalville areas) roughly within 30 minutes of our facility. Areas outside of this area will be considered depending on availability, but will incur additional charges.

If you wish us to collect from your vet please notify them of this and I will contact them directly to make the arrangements.

Collections are made during the week available between 11am and 2pm, depending on distance. If you need a same day collection service please telephone as soon as you can in the morning.

Collections are doorstep only. We do not enter domestic buildings to collect pets unless there are exceptional circumstances. Please ensure your pet is wrapped in a clean blanket or towel to enable safe, dignified and hygienic transfer.

Please let us know if there are vehicle access or street parking issues at your address.

We will notify you once your pet’s ashes are ready for collection from our premises.

Return of Ashes

We follow a strict process to ensure that our customers receive only their and all of their pet's ashes. Ashes are available to collect from the crematorium by appointment from the next working day.  If customers ask us to hold ashes for periods of time longer than a couple of weeks, then they will be stored securely in our storeroom for up to a period of 12 months. Ashes cannot be handed back to a customer when I am not on the premises unless previously arranged.
